The iPad's touchscreen is a great canvas for digital art, and the experience is particularly good with the Apple Pencil 2. Both really help choosing colors in different lighting situations. The best drawing apps for iPad can let you express your creativity at any time in any place. I also use other advanced color palette like the approximate color and intermediate color palette. I often keep the color wheel palette on top of the canvas so I can quickly choose the right colors. They have a very natural feel and a high response to pressure sensitivity going from thick to thin lines in one smooth stroke is quite easy, especially when using the Stabilization slider that allows you to slow down the brush stroke for more precision. I also love using the inking brushes for my line work. And when I'm painting, I like the way colors blend together by using the Mix function in the brush customization menu. I like how customizable the software is, all shortcuts and modifier keys can be set to different functions easily. To honor the town’s heritage as an arts colony, Gorham painted an outdoor mural called “Carmel Shell” which is located on the corner of Mission Street and Sixth Avenue. The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea created a campaign to promote solidarity in the village. The inspiration for the Artist-in-Residence program began early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Using traditional hand-painting techniques, particularly the German folk style "bauernmalerei," Gorham designed and painted this piece as a celebration of the Hofsas House Hotel, and its characteristic art history.Inspired by the twin headboards painted by artist Maxine Albro in 1947, this headboard pays homage to both the scalloped silhouette of the original, and the palette of her original Hofsas House mural.Custom built by local carpenter Gary Doubledee, and hand-painted by artist-in-residence Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham, this unique headboard offers a quintessentially Carmel backdrop for your stay at Hofsas House. She will also paint a few characters on the entrance door that will highlight the unique nature of the room. Marie-Clare will showcase her first Artist-in-Residence project of creating a custom headboard and room décor for Room 36, which is a deluxe king room with fireplace, private balcony and ocean view on the street level of San Carlos Street, the same floor as the hotel’s lobby. The complimentary art-themed reception for hotel guests will include meeting the artist, a sneak peek at the current project in which people can watch and ask questions of the artist, plus wine and custom culinary creations for the event by Chef Ben Spungin of Alta Bakery. There will be an art reception, live painting, and mural unveiling. Join Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham for our Artist-in-Residence event on March 26th, 2021 from 4-6pm. Her hand-painted murals can be found throughout town, notably including the Carmel Shell. Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham, a Carmel-based folk artist, whose distinctive aesthetic incorporates medieval themes and iconography, rooted within the ethos of the California Arts & Crafts movement. It's no surprise, then, that it's home to a thriving community of artists - a fact that's celebrated front and center at The Hofsas House Hotel. Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, is one such city. Anyone who's been to cities like Paris, Rome, or Prague, however, knows that some cities also are art. It can be confused with a few other similar thrush species and has a song that can be similar to others too ( that is the toughest test). Let’s graduate from the catbird to something more challenging - a Wood Thrush. Next, assuming you think you might know what the bird is, how quickly can you find it to confirm? And what type of images are they, how many and (lastly, and the most subjective) how’s the quality? Likewise, the eBird app is for sending in eBird checklists, not for figuring out what bird you are looking at. Hmmm…that Grey Catbird that the other apps quickly pointed to is not so easy to find with Peterson.īirdsEye is not really set up for the novice - allowing you to either search for or scroll through birds that have been recently seen in your location (based on eBird), but you really have to know what you are looking at to find it. Peterson Birds has already fallen behind the pack - it only has a family list that I have to scroll through, with icons. iBird has the same filter-type list, although a little more hidden under its search function, and Sibley eGuide to Birds also has a similar function under its Smart Search - though not as clever as Audubon’s! ![]() that should help narrow your choices down. Hidden in National Geographic Birds is a way to something similar - filtering the search by color, size, habitat, etc. It then creates a list of possible choices. Merlin treats you like a true novice - and leads you through a series of questions: location (allow GPS use), date (useful for season), size (with a series of useful images), choice of several colors, and what and where the bird was. You can browse by shape (duck-like, hawk-like, perching, etc.). First you need to narrow it down - big, small, hawk, warbler, woodpecker, whatever.īut wait! Audubon Birds is already helping you do that. Photo © Devan King / TNC Step One: Identifying a BirdĪ novice birder spots a bird in the backyard and would like to identify it. With new smartphones having lots of space, this shouldn’t be an issue, but older ones could struggle. Of course, some things are a matter of personal preference, such as illustrations versus photos.Īll of these apps need a lot of space (and a WiFi connection) to download (~500 MB+), but then you can use them offline when in the field, which is very nice. All 5 of these apps offer some bonus features - but generally, I am comparing basic features that all share.Whether the app allows you to compare similar birds and in which ways. ![]() ![]()

For online-only businesses it’s not an issue. For a start-up with little to no brand recognition, a street address (especially a recognizable one) communicates a credibility that a PO Box can’t. What does a PO Box say about your business? For a large, established brand, it probably means little. Still, many use a PO Box rather than their actual street address - especially, if there is no central business location. Street address versus a PO Box: Standard class business mailers don’t need to worry about returns flooding their offices. Following are some alternatives and the strategy we use at Gunderson Direct to choose an effective return address: Think about how the “who” behind the mail can make a difference in your prospect’s perception of what they are getting and why. Other than that, the post office is indifferent to how the sender is identified. Specifically, a bona fide address appearing either on the upper left of the envelope or on the top of the back flap of the envelope. The post office requires commercial mailers using a permit or precanceled stamps (which means virtually all bulk mailer) to have a return address. In the world of nanosecond decision making, the return address on your envelope could be the number one determinant of your prospect’s keep or toss decision as well. The “from” line in an email is cited as a key determinant of opens. Once it’s clear the letter is addressed to you, your eye probably travels to the upper left of the envelope to see who it’s from. It’s no secret that getting the envelope opened is the first, and some would argue the most, important step toward a successful direct marketing program. Which envelope would you open first? One from Donald Trump or from Joe Biden? A mailing from your current bank or from one you’ve never done business with? And what if you had no idea who sent you the letter because all that appeared in the upper left corner of the envelope was a street address? Consistent branding helps build recognition and reinforces your professional image.Who the mail comes from can influence response. Ensure that your letterhead design matches your other marketing collateral, such as business cards and envelopes. Maintain ConsistencyĬonsistency is key in letterhead design. Use CMYK color mode for accurate color reproduction, ensure proper margins, and choose suitable paper stock for durability and a premium feel. If you plan to print your letterhead, keep in mind the printing process and constraints. Test your design across different formats to ensure it retains its visual integrity and readability, regardless of the medium. Your letterhead may be used in various formats, such as printed letters, digital documents, or email templates. We go over here to thisĬarbon hydrogen bond, and we could do the same thing. We could give one electron to oxygen and one electron to carbon in that bond. So if we have two electrons and one bond, and those two electronsĪre shared equally, we could split them up. Those bonding electrons being shared equally. And since we're doing formal charge, we need to think about all ![]() I could put a four here, and from that four we're going to subtract the number of valenceĮlectrons in the bonded atom or the number of valence electrons that carbon has around it in our drawing. We already know thatĬarbon is supposed to have four valence electrons, so Number of valence electrons that carbon is supposed to have. Number of valence electrons in the free atom or the So if we want to assign aįormal charge to carbon, we need to think about the Same for the bond betweenĬarbon and hydrogen, right? Each bond consists of two electrons, so I can go around and put inĪll of my bonding electrons. So the bond between oxygen and carbon consists of two electrons. The bonding electrons or the electrons in thoseīonds around carbon, and we know that each bondĬonsists of two electrons. Structure on the left here, which is a dot structure for methanol, and let's assign aįormal charge to carbon. So one definition for formal charge is the hypothetical charge that would result if all bonding electronsĪre shared equally. Both formal charge and oxidation states are ways of counting electrons, and they're both very useful concepts. Regardless of what system we use, the carbon is still satisfied because it has an octet of electrons. Both of these system simply account for electrons to make the math simpler. The only difference between the two is that formal charge doesn’t take into account electronegativity, while oxidation number does. For a molecule to be polar it requires polar bonds and certain molecular geometries so the dipole moments of the polar bonds don’t cancel.įormal charge and oxidation number are just convenient ways of assigning electrons to atoms in molecules. Entire molecules are most often where we use polarity and it describes a molecule with a negative and positive pole (or side). Individual bonds can be polar if the bonding atoms have a high enough electronegativity difference, and therefore the more electronegative atom pulls much stronger on the electrons than the other. In a covalent bond, the bonding electrons spend more time around the more electronegative atom as opposed to the less electronegative one.īeing polar in this context means one end has an excess of negative charge while the other has a lack of negative charge (or is positive). Electronegativity is the measure of this attraction elements have for electrons. Certain elements have more attraction to electrons than others and so the electrons end up spending more time around one atom compared to the other in a bond. It’s sharing those eight electrons with the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in covalent bonds, but the sharing isn’t equitable. It has an octet (8) of electrons from bonding with the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Well the carbon is satisfied with the number of electrons it has in methanol. |
